Miller, Eunice Arlene Litwiller
February 5, 1926 - March 24, 2023

Eunice Miller sparked resistance to injustice

She is remembered by Luis Ma. Alman Bornes, of the pastoral team of Iglesia Anabautista Menonita de Buenos Aires as "the driving force that awakened the spark enlightening the search for building a more radical, more Anabaptist, more ecumenical community."

His memories of Eunice were included in a digital church bulletin on March 25, 2023: "As a committed pacifist, she taught us to stand up against and resist any injustice, any exclusion, any tyranny."

Eunice was born February 5, 1926, in Pehuajó, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Ada (Ramseyer) and Nelson Litwiller, who had been appointed by Mennonite Board of Missions (MBM) in 1925 to serve in Argentina. Eunice married Daniel W. Miller in 1947. MBM is a predecessor agency of Mennonite Mission Network.

Daniel and Eunice became long-term missionaries/fraternal workers from 1950 to 1985, serving in Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico under MBM, and the Franconia Mennonite Conference. She also served as a translator for Mennonite World Conference, working as a team with her daughter Marisa from 2003 to 2021.

In 2020, Eunice was interviewed for Personajes Que Dejan Huella Entre Los Anabautistas (People who left footprints among the Anabaptists). She wrote:

"With my husband Daniel we formed a pastoral couple, doing joint work; this is how a fraternal relationship should be. There must be no difference between men and women. Each one makes their contribution according to their gifts. We are all pastors in a community of believers. We are all servants, serving one another."
During several months in 1986 they traveled throughout Central America with the Latin American Anabaptist Seminary (SEMILLA), offering biblical formation to members of the congregations and meeting with local church leaders in small communities.

Linda Shelly, Director for Latin America, said Eunice chose the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount as a guide for community practice, and she encouraged Mennonite churches to recover their historic theological roots in the Anabaptist movement of the 16th century.

Eunice's nephew Edward Miller expressed recently that "Eunice was a strong Christian woman who always spoke her mind; she was a great model of how to live the Christian life."

Daniel and Eunice retired in 1986 in Buenos Aires, where they became members of the Iglesia Anabautista Menonita de Buenos Aires (IAMBA).

Surviving her are son Robert Kent (Houston, Texas), daughter Marisa (Buenos Aires, Argentina), six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren (U.S. and Argentina). She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel and her son Gregory. Eunice's remains were cremated on March 25, 2023, and interment of her ashes will be held at a future date in a special memorial ceremony in the British Cemetery in Buenos Aires.

---------------

In memoriam Eunice Litwiller Miller (1926-2023) Eunice L. Miller, 97, died on 24 March 2023 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eunice Miller translated for Mennonite World Conference, working as a team with her daughter Marisa from 2003 to 2021. She was born 5 February 1926 in Pehuajó, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Ada and Nelson Litwiller, who had been appointed by Mennonite Board of Missions (MBM) in 1925 to serve in Argentina. Eunice was married 13 September 1947 to Daniel W. Miller, from Akron, Pennsylvania, Ohio (son of Orie O. Miller and Elta W. Miller). Eunice and Daniel Miller were missionaries/fraternal workers (1950-1986) serving in Argentina and Uruguay under MBM (now Mennonite Mission Network), and later in Mexico under the Franconia Mennonite Conference. During 1986 they traveled throughout Central America with the Latin American Anabaptist Seminary, offering biblical formation to members of congregations and meeting with local church leaders in small communities, “to reflect and consider the Anabaptist concept of the church as a possible model for our churches today.” (“Holistic Mission in Action”, Coretta Thomson, MQR, Jan. 2023). As Coretta also wrote in this article, “the story of their work demonstrates the putting into practice of the holistic models of church and mission… which put equal emphasis on spiritual salvation and physical well-being… indicating that comprehensive discipleship and horizontal church structures aid the spiritual growth of both missionized and missionaries…” Eunice Miller described her work with her husband: “We formed a pastoral couple, doing joint work; this is how a fraternal relationship should be. There must be no difference between men and women. Each one makes their contribution according to their gifts... We are all pastors in a community of believers. We are all servants, serving one another…” The couple retired in 1986 in Buenos Aires, where they became members of the Iglesia Anabautista Menonita de Buenos Aires (IAMBA). She is survived by two children; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters. Comments from Mennonite leaders: “Eunice chose the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount as a guide for community practice, and encouraged Mennonite churches to recover their historic theological roots in the Anabaptist movement of the 16th century.” —Linda Shelley, Mennonite Mission Network “Eunice was the great driving force that awakened the spark enlightening the search for building a more radical, more Anabaptist, more ecumenical community. As a committed pacifist, she taught us to stand up against and resist any injustice, any exclusion, any tyranny. We are all brothers and sisters; in the Christian community there are no titles, there is no hierarchy. That is for the army, not for the followers of Jesus.” —Luis M. Miller, Glen E.
September 18, 1932 - December 21, 2023

Glen E. Miller, who dedicated his life to the care and service of others, died on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at age 91. Glen died peacefully at home with Marilyn, his beloved wife of 68 years, his three surviving children, and other family members by his side.

Glen was born to Charles and Bessie (Frey) Miller on September 18th, 1932, in Archbold Ohio, the fourth of nine children. Glen’s early life was formed by close family ties in the context of the Great Depression. He married Marilyn Oswald in 1955, graduated from Goshen College in 1957 and from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in 1961.

After graduation from medical school, Glen and Marilyn spent two years in medical mission work in Haiti. This experience helped shape their values and worldview. Glen was a dedicated and caring physician. He practiced internal medicine in Bellefontaine, Ohio, for twenty-five years, provided leadership as a hospital administrator for six years, and eventually served as Medical Director of Mary Rutan Hospital.

After he retired from medicine, Glen and Marilyn co-directed the work of Mennonite Central Committee in Calcutta, India, for seven years and subsequently worked in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and London, England. Over the course of their lives, they would travel to more than 40 countries.

While living in Calcutta, Glen suffered a severe heart attack. In later years he would have a second heart attack, two cardiac arrests, and coronary by-pass surgery. He gratefully accepted each new day as a gift, even as he dealt with the mystery of why he survived against the odds.

Glen remained curious throughout his life and was committed to life-long learning. At age seventy, he graduated from Methodist Theological School in Ohio. In his later years, he drew on his expertise as a medical practitioner, his theological interests, and his own experience with heart disease to author two books: Empowering the Patient and Living Thoughtfully, Dying Well. He also wrote a weekly blog from 2014-2016 with that same title.

Glen’s boundless curiosity was evident in his desire to know and connect with whoever he encountered. He loved to hear people’s stories and knew what was happening in the lives of his loved ones. He was an attentive mentor who guided and encouraged younger medical doctors and international development workers, as well as a genial host who made each dinner guest feel as though they were a part of the family. All who knew Glen will remember him for his loving kindness, generosity, wisdom, and humor, especially his children and their spouses, his grandchildren and their spouses, and his great grandchildren. In his last years he wrote, “I want to be remembered for a welcoming smile, an attentive ear, and words of encouragement.”

Glen was predeceased by his son Kenneth Charles Miller who died on October 3rd, 2023. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, Kenneth’s wife Doris (Boehr) of Goshen, Indiana and three children–Kori Leaman-Miller (Larry) of Denver, Colorado, Edward Miller (Carolyn Marzke) of Hyattsville, Maryland, Janine Miller Ostergren (David) of Goshen, Indiana–nine grandchildren (and their 6 spouses) and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Assembly Mennonite Church in Goshen, Indiana, on January 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation hours will be held on Friday evening, January 12, from 5:00 to 8:00, also at Assembly Mennonite Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, https://mcc.org/donate or to the Assembly Mennonite Church's Two Percent Committee.

June 5, 1921 - September 7, 2023

Mary Kathryn Mishler, 102, of Goshen, died Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Greencroft Health Care.

Mary was born June 5, 1921, in Elida, Ohio, to Joseph and Barbara (Greider) Diller.

On July 12, 1946, she married Dorsa J. Mishler, of Shipshewana, at her mother’s home in Elida, Ohio. He preceded her in death in 2005.

She is survived by four sons: John (Phyllis) Mishler of Goshen, Robert (Carol) Mishler of Singers Glen, Virginia, Don (Nina Newburn) Mishler of Goshen, and Dennis (Pattie) Mishler of Brownsburg, Indiana; seven grandchildren: Nathan Mishler, Rob Mishler, Annie Springer, Mary Kathryn Mishler II, Jade Madrid, Jackie Brewer, and Andrew Mishler; three step-grandchildren: Anna Parker, John and Lonnie Newburn; seven great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren. A sister, Martha Yoder, of Archbold, Ohio, and a brother-in-law, Paul Mishler, of Shipshewana, also survive.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman and Norman Diller and a sister, Esther Hartman, as well as an infant daughter, Barbara Anna, and an infant granddaughter Annalee Mishler.

Mary graduated from Gomer High School, Elida, Ohio, and worked for several years at the Lima Post Office before meeting and marrying Dorsa. As newlyweds, Mary and Dorsa left for Ethiopia where they served with the Mennonite Central Committee, from 1946 to 1948, doing relief work. Mary worked in the new hospital as an assistant nurse, with only on-the-job training from Nurse Nancy Conrad. A highlight of their time in Ethiopia was the meal that Mary and Dorsa enjoyed as guests of Ethiopian King Haile Selassie and his Queen at their Royal Summer Palace! Mary recalled the couple’s years in Ethiopia as some of the happiest and most fulfilling of their lives. Dorsa and Mary helped to lay the foundation for the hospital in Nazareth, which remains in operation. The Meserete Kirstos Church they helped establish, with the blessing of Haile Selassie, now numbers in the hundreds of thousands of members, countrywide.

Mary was proud of her career as a therapist at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center, which spanned over twenty-five years. Her specialty was enabling patient healing through psychodrama. She helped countless numbers of Oaklawn patients work through their problems and improve their lives.

In 1963, Mary had the opportunity to continue her education at Indiana University, where she studied art, focusing on pottery and drawing. She became a skilled stained-glass artist and executed a large set of windows for the chapel at Oaklawn Psychiatric Center, which she considered her masterpiece. Mary also made special stained-glass pieces for the homes of her children and grandchildren, along with two intricate Tiffany style lamps.

Mary was an active and enthusiastic member of Prairie Street Mennonite Church for over seventy years. In 1998, she received a well-deserved honor as “Woman of the Year” by the Women of Elkhart County.

Our Mom, Mary Kathryn Diller Mishler, was a “force of nature”; she was industrious, energetic, passionate, enthusiastic, determined, and rather forthright.

A reception for friends and a memorial service will follow at a later date, with burial at Prairie Street Cemetery.

Memorial donations in memory may be given to Prairie Street Mennonite Church or to the Oaklawn Foundation.
